Keurig brewers and K cups continue to grow in popularity. Keurig brewers made up about half of coffee brewer sales during the fourth quarter of 2010. Green Mountain Roasters has recently announced that they will be introducing Starbucks K cups to the ever growing lines of available coffees. After announcing the partnership with Starbucks, Green Mountain stock rose 41%.

Until now, Starbucks has been left out of the K cup market. They have licensed their coffee to the Tassimo single serve coffee brewer which has less than 5% of the market share. Starbucks K cups will include coffee varieties as well as single serve versions of the companies Tazo teas. With the new K cups, Starbucks will keep consumers happy and share in a larger part of the market.

Beginning in fall of 2011, the K cups will be available in supermarkets, drug stores, wholesale clubs and department stores in the U.S. and Canada. Next year Starbucks will begin carrying the K cups and Keurig brewers in their stores. Under the new deal, Starbucks is still able to develop their own single serve machines and coffees as the patents on the system will soon expire. However, the company has made no indication as to whether they will move in this direction.
